For the third year in a row the San José State University women's track and field team has multiple athletes competing at the 2017 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships West Preliminaries.Three long jumpers: Destiny Longmire (Fr., Moreno Valley, Calif.), Cambree Harbaugh (Jr., Meridian, Idaho) and Kelsey Johnson-Upshaw (Jr., Arlington, Texas), and distance runner Jennifer Sandoval (Fr., Fontana, Calif.) will represent the Spartans at Mike A. Myers Stadium on the University of Texas campus on May 25-27.
San José State is the only school along the west coast and just one of three in all the West Region to have three or more athletes qualify in the long jump.
"We are very proud of our ladies who made the first round of NCAA's in Austin," said SJSU director of track & field Jeff Petersmeyer. "I'm excited that we got three into the long jump, and Jenny Sandoval has been outstanding all year. She will be ready to run a great 10,000 meters."Only the top-48 of each event in the NCAA West Region make it to the preliminary championships. The Spartans will compete against the region's very best, vying for a top-12 time/mark which punches a ticket to the NCAA Championship Finals in Eugene, Ore., on June 7-10.Freshman Destiny Longmire enters the meet with the West Region's ninth-best outdoor long jump of the year at 6.39 meters. She achieved the mark at the Mountain West Championships where she was the long jump champion.Harbaugh and Johnson-Upshaw also earned their qualifying marks at the Mountain West Championships. Both of them enter into the preliminaries with a distance of 6.06 meters.While Longmire and Johnson-Upshaw will compete for the first time at the NCAA Prelims, they'll have Harbaugh to lean on as she prepares for her third trip in as many years.Jennifer Sandoval is San José State's first long-distance runner to reach the NCAA West Prelims. She will run the 10,000 after qualifying with a time of 34:44.17 at the Mt. SAC Relays (4/13).Sandoval is one of only four freshmen in all of the region to qualify for the 10,000 meters joining Colorado's Makena Morley, Baylor's Lindsey Bradley and Oklahoma's Isabelle Rose. It is the second time in three years that SJSU has multiple freshmen competing at the prelims.Both the long jump and the 10,000 meter events fall on the opening day of the meet on Thursday, May 25. The long jump is set to begin at 7:15 p.m. (CT) preceding the 10,000 which begins at 9:00 p.m. (CT).Live results will be provided at www.texassports.com.
