STANFORD, Calif. - San Jose State held Stanford to just four hits but one was a go-ahead inside the park home run to Cardinal left fielder Quinn Brodey and lost 4-3 on a warm Tuesday evening at the Sunken Diamond.

SJSU dropped its record to 15-27-1 while Stanford extended its winning streak to nine games to improve to 28-12 on the season.

Holding onto a 3-2 lead in the seventh, the Spartans committed an error on a routine grounder to second to allow the Stanford leadoff batter to reach base. It was one of four errors committed by SJSU.

Spartan reliever Josh Zanger retired the next two batters but allowed a towering shot to Brodey to dead center that caromed off the wall. Brodey beat the SJSU relay to score the go ahead run on an inside the park home run to make it a 4-3 game.

Seven Spartan pitchers combined to allow just four hits but the four errors proved costly resulting in unearned runs for all four runs scored by the Cardinal.

Offensively, San Jose State collected eight hits, with a trio of Spartans getting an RBI apiece, in the second, third and fifth innings.

Corey Olivet (1-for-4, RBI) singled home David Campbell in the second frame to tie the score 1-1.

In the third, Shane Timmons (1-for-4, RBI) put the Spartans up 2-1 with an RBI single scoring Kellen Strahm (2-for-5, R). Campbell (2-for-3, R, RBI) tacked on a third run for SJSU in the fifth when his single drove in Chris Williams (1-for-3, R).

The Spartans held a 3-1 lead heading to the bottom half of the sixth when Zanger allowed a lead off single to Duke Kinamon. An errant pickoff attempt throw by Zanger moved Kinamon all the way to third where he would score on a grounder to cut the Spartan lead to 3-2.

Zanger (1-1) took the loss for the Spartans while Cardinal reliever Keith Weisenberg (1-0) who pitched the seventh was credited with the win.

Colton Hock earned the save, his 12th of the season, shutting down the Spartans in order in the ninth. It was the SJSU's 16th one-run game of the season where they are 9-7.

San Jose State returns to Mountain West conference action this weekend against San Diego State. The series opener is scheduled for Friday, May 5 at 7:00 p.m. PT. The Spartans are currently 1 ½ games behind fourth place Air Force in the conference standings. The top four teams advance to the conference tournament.
