Columbus, Ohio-- Three Spartans shot five-over 77s in the first round of the NCAA Columbus Regional. The San José State women's golf team finished the day at 310 and is eighth out of 18 teams at The Ohio State Golf Club Scarlet Course.

The first round started with a weather delay of one hour and 30 minutes due to frost. The team started the day on #10. The Spartans made nine birdies during the round, tying for the third-highest total made on the day. The team is just one shot out of sixth place as the top-six teams after Wednesday's final round advance to the NCAA Championships May 19-24.

My Leander, Franziska Friedrich and Alexandra Cooper all shot a 77 to lead the Spartans on Monday. They are tied for 22nd at five-over par.

Leander had a rough first nine holes, starting her day bogey-double bogey-bogey-birdie-bogey to be four-over after five holes. She then responded with back-to-back pars before a bogey and birdie left her at four-over after nine holes. After a bogey on #1, Leander then made pars on four of her next five holes with a birdie on #5. She was only one of two players in the field to make a birdie on this hole. Leander then finished the round bogey-par-par.

Friedrich started her day by shooting even over her first nine holes, making a bogey on #10, a birdie on #14 and seven pars. She went to one-under par with a birdie on her 10th hole of the day, the par-four #1. Her round then shifted as she made six bogeys over her last eight holes with two pars.

Cooper was four-over par during her first nine holes, making five pars and a birdie on #18. She rebounded somewhat over her final nine holes with four pars and two birdies (#7 & 8). Cooper tied Leander with a team-best three birdies made on the day.

Abegail Arevalo shot an eight-over 80 to tie for 43rd, while Elizabeth Schultz had a 10-over 82 to tie for 81st. Arevalo made just one birdie during her round and 10 pars. Schultz was just three-over par after her first nine holes with three bogeys and six pars but shot nine-over par over her final nine holes.

"This was a long, rough day," stated Spartan head coach John Dormann. "I have said that this is a hard course, and it was considerably windy during the round. We need to bounce back tomorrow."

The Spartans will play the second round on Tuesday with South Carolina and Michigan. The teams begin off the first tee at 7:30 a.m. Eastern/4:30 a.m. Pacific.
