Arianna Newcomb Commits to Spartan Volleyball for 2017

June 19, 2017

San Jose, Calif.—Arianna Newcomb, a 5-8 outside hitter from Spokane, Wash., will join the San José State University volleyball program beginning with the 2017 season, as announced by Spartan head coach Jolene Shepardson.

Newcomb played at West Valley College during the 2016-17 school year on both the indoor and beach volleyball teams. She led the team in kills with 332, 4.26 per set, and digs at 361, 4.63 per set. Newcomb was a first team All-Coast Conference, North Division, for both the indoor and beach seasons. She, along with her partner Hayley Sturgeon, competed at the California Community College Athletic Association Beach Championships, a first in school history for a West Valley pair.

A 2015 graduate of Mount Spokane High School, Newcomb was a four-year starter and a first team all-league selection her senior year. After graduation, she played one season at Highline Community College before transferring to West Valley. During her club career, Newcomb played for Sideout Volleyball Club and College Prep Academy Volleyball Club.

"Arianna has the characteristics we want in Spartan Gym," said Shepardson. "She got my attention during beach season initially with her ability to read the game well and her competitive encouragement towards her teammates to improve each point. We are thankful to have her in our program, because she will help maintain our consistent ball control and fight on defense."

"I chose to attend San José State University because of the beautiful campus and the high level of play," said Newcomb. "When I went on my visit, I learned that the team cares a lot about one another and put in all they can everyday to be the best that they can be, which I love about the program. I also love how committed the coaches are to the players both on and off the court. I am excited to be a Spartan in the fall!"
