SAN JOSE, Calif. - The San José State University men's soccer team opens its 2017 regular season at the new SJSU Soccer Field against the two-time defending National Champions Stanford Cardinal on August 25. The Spartans play a total of four 2016 NCAA Tournament teams, welcoming two of those squads to the new SJSU Soccer Field. Men's soccer head coach Simon Tobin made the announcement.
"This fall opens a new era for SJSU soccer with the unveiling of our new soccer specific grass field. I couldn't think of a better way to start the new season than against Stanford University. They are the National Champions for the past two years and coached by my former player and assistant coach, Jeremy Gunn. It is a game that my team and I eagerly await as an opportunity to compete against the very best," said Tobin.
The Spartans kick off the Western Athletic Conference schedule on the road against teams that finished first and second in the regular season last season. The Spartans play the 2016 regular season WAC champion Utah Valley (Sept. 29) followed by second place Seattle University (Oct. 1).
San José State's first conference home match welcomes a 2016 NCAA Tournament team, UNLV (Oct. 6). UNLV qualified for the NCAA's winning the WAC Tournament last year. The Spartans will also host conference foes Grand Canyon (Oct. 8), Air Force (Oct. 27), Missouri-Kansas City (10/29) and Cal State University Bakersfield (Nov. 3).
"The conference will be very tough. I believe this year's WAC will produce at least two NCAA tournament teams. It is a much more balanced schedule than the past couple of years, as we endeavor to produce a successful, stylish team for our new facility," said the Spartans' fourth-year head coach.
The WAC schedule consists of a 10-match single round-robin format for all 11 WAC teams for a total of 10 matches. The points system will be used to determine conference standings where each team will receive three points for a win and one point for a tie. The top six teams are expected to advance to the WAC tournament.
To prepare for the conference schedule, SJSU will play eight non-conference matches including three NCAA tournament qualifiers from last season - Stanford (Aug. 25), CSU Northridge (Sept. 14) and Pacific (Sep. 17) - with the last two matches on the road.
In all, SJSU will play in 18 regular season matches with 10 at home and eight on the road.
Two exhibition matches, both at home against CSU Monterey Bay and Santa Clara, will kick off the 2017 season.
