Tempe, Ariz.----- The San Jose State University women's tennis team concluded a highly successful season with its sixth consecutive intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) team academic award and individual academic recognition to four Spartans.
San Jose State was one of 720 NCAA and NAIA men's and women's tennis programs that had a team cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 or higher on a 4.00 scale to earn ITA's annual team academic award.
"This is a well-deserved honor for this team. It's truly amazing that more than half of our players eligible for the ITA's individual academic honor earned their recognition, too," said San Jose State head coach Chad Skorupka about the 2017 Mountain West champions and NCAA Tournament participants.
"This was a great year on and off the court for San Jose State women's tennis."
Four Spartans, recent graduates Marie Klocker, Marine Dans and Gaelle Rey and senior-to-be Sybille Gauvain were named an ITA Scholar-Athlete. To be named an ITA Scholar-Athlete, a student-athlete must be enrolled at the institution for at least two semesters, be a letter award winner and have a grade-point average of at least 3.50.
For Klocker and Rey, two that graduated with magna cum laude honors from San Jose State University in May 2017, it was their fourth ITA Scholar-Athlete award. Gauvain and Dans earned the ITA's Scholar-Athlete Award for the first time.
On the singles ladder, Gauvain, who finished the season ranked 89th nationally in singles, played #1; Klocker, #2; Dans, #3; and Rey, #6. Gauvain and Klocker were a nationally-ranked doubles team at #64; Dans and Rey were the Spartans #2-doubles pair.
In the last six years, San Jose State's women's tennis players received 26 individual ITA Scholar-Athlete national awards.
