Men's Soccer Ties Santa Clara in Second Exhibition Match

Aug. 20, 2017

San Jose, Calif.--- The San José State men's soccer team played to a 2-2 tie in their second exhibition match against the Santa Clara Broncos at the new Spartan Soccer Complex.

Santa Clara opened the scoring in the 37th minute with a shot by Satoshi Chafin off a corner kick assist from Andres Jimenez.

Three minutes later, Valdemar Anderson scored on a penalty kick to go up 2-0 on the Spartans.

San José State's Jeremy Romero scored in the box on a header with an assist from Joe Kay to keep the game within reach.

The Broncos had the lead at 2-1 heading into halftime. The Broncos dominated the field, peppering 12 shots on goal, to the Spartans four. Kris Donaldson of the Spartans had six saves in the first half which kept the Spartans in the game.

"I don't think we played that well in the first half," said Spartan's head coach Simon Tobin, "Were still doing double days, and in the first half I thought they were dominating. They key for us was getting a goal before halftime."

In the second half, however, the momentum shifted. Head Coach Simon Tobin changed his lineup, and shifted the momentum in favor of the Spartans. The lineup featured multiple freshman, and newcomers to the 2017 team.

"We put in seven to eight freshman out there in the second half, and I was very impressed. I thought they played some better soccer. I enjoyed it, and thought my young boys got us back in the game. We had Finley, Max Allen, Brian Nevarez, Kalei (Tolentino Perry) come in, and make a difference."

The score remained 2-1 until sophomore Suliman Khorami scored on a shot from the left side of the field to the top right corner of the net in the 80th minute.

In the second half, the Spartans allowed 5 shots on goal, and finished the game tied at 2-2. The Broncos outshot the Spartans 17-10 for the game. Santa Clara had a 10-5 advantage with shots on goal in the exhibition match.

"Santa Clara had the better looks at goal, and we gave up too many good looks. Another day we could have been punished. We have to get ready for Stanford" said coach Tobin.

The Spartans will begin their regular season with a four consecutive home matches. The regular season begins Friday, August 25th at 5:00 p.m. with a cross town showdown against Stanford.
