San Jose, Calif.--- The San José State University men's soccer team was defeated 4-0 in their first regular season game of the season against the two-time defending champion Stanford Cardinal at the Spartan Soccer Complex. Stanford scored three goals in the first 32 minutes to win their first non-conference match of the season.
"Were still young, and it was a learning experience," said Spartan head coach Simon Tobin. "For many of my players this was their first countable college game experience. We were very naive. We played the number one team in the country, but had some good moments"
Stanford (1-0-0) scored all goals on corner kicks. They had 11 shots on goal to the Spartans four. Stanford's Langsdorf scored two goals, both with an assist from Sam Werner.
"They are very good physically." said San Jose State sophomore defender Jeff Dukes, "They are really tough, and we were not physically mature enough to go against that"
Spartan Kris Donaldson, and Stanford's, Nico Corti, each had one save in goal.
"He (Stanford head coach Jeremy Gunn) was my player for four years, he was my assistant for seven years. We have played each other five times as coaches, and he has beaten me every time. They are a tremendous team"
The Spartans next game is on Friday, September 1 at 5:00 p.m. against UC Davis at the Spartan Soccer Complex.
