San Jose, Calif.----- Wide receiver Bailey Gaither and quarterback Josh Love connected on a pair of first-quarter touchdowns before #19-ranked USF (University of South Florida) erupted for 28 second-quarter points en route to a 42-22 non-conference football win over San Jose State University.
After Bryce Crawford opened the game's scoring with a 34-yard field goal, Gaither caught passes of 10 and 6 yards from Love to give the Spartans (0-1) a 16-0 lead. The sophomore receiver also added a blocked punt that preceded his second touchdown play.
In a game that had 189 offensive plays, 23 punts and 18 penalties covering 4-hours and 3-minutes, USF (1-0) withstood San Jose State's fast start with a 28-point second quarter.
Bulls' running back D'Ernest Johnson scored on runs of 2 and 50 yards and quarterback Quinton Flowers threw scoring passes of 24 and 49 yards giving USF a 28-16 halftime advantage.
Flowers completed 11-of-23 passes for 212 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 70 yards on 18 carries and scored on a 1-yard fourth quarter run. His touchdown gave USF a 42-16 lead.
San Jose State was plagued by three interceptions, two of them off of mishandled passes from Josh Love who was 18-of-36 with three interceptions for 192 yards and two touchdowns. The Bulls turned two of those interceptions into 14 second-quarter points.
The Spartans closed out the scoring with redshirt freshman Montel Aaron at quarterback. He connected with wide receiver Justin Holmes on a 22-yard pass with 8:25 remaining. Aaron was 7-of-13 for 86 yards and a touchdown.
San Jose State returns to action Saturday, September 2, hosting Cal Poly in a 4:30 p.m. game in CEFCU Stadium.
