VOLLEYBALL HEADS TO SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA FOR THE WEEKEND: After a successful start to the 2017 season in the Bay Area, the San José State volleyball team travels to Southern California this weekend for three matches at the Fullerton/Riverside Classic. The team plays at UC Riverside Friday afternoon, and at Cal State Fullerton for two matches on Saturday against the Titans and Howard.
The Spartans bring a 2-0 record to the tournament after defeating Pepperdine, 3-2 at Spartan Gym last Friday, and San Francisco, 3-1 in the city on Saturday.LIVE STATS: Live stat links for the matches are available on the San José State website at www.SJSUSpartans.com.
GÃVIO RECEIVES MW HONOR: Giulia Gávio, from Rio de Janiero, Brazil, was named the Mountain West Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week after leading the team to a 2-0 record last week. She averaged 4.22 kills, 4.39 points and 3.00 digs in nine sets played and hit .278 for the two matches. She recorded a double-double against Pepperdine with 29 kills and 14 digs and hit .333 for the match. Her 29 kills are the highest total for a Mountain West hitter this season. Gávio added nine kills and 13 digs in the win at San Francisco.
ABOUT UC RIVERSIDE: The Highlanders enter the weekend with a 2-1 record after defeating Farleigh Dickinson (3-0) and Drake (3-1), but losing to Bryant (0-3). Head coach Michelle Patton-Coleman is in her fifth year at the school. Brooke Callahan leads the team with 40 kills, 4.00 per set, while Meg Grahm is the top blocker on the team with six.

ABOUT CAL STATE FULLERTON: The Titans begin the weekend 2-1 after defeating Farleigh Dickinson and Bryant, 3-0, but falling 3-2 to Drake. Head coach Ashley Preston is in her third season at the school. Madeline Schneider leads the team with 33 kills, 3.00 ps, while Summer Kerins has 10 blocks on the year.

ABOUT HOWARD: The Bulldogs enter Tuesday night's match with a 14-14 overall record and 5-12 MW mark. The team defeated Utah State, 3-1, at home last Wednesday. Aleisha Coates leads the team with 374 kills, 3.60 per set, while Jacqueline Hutcheson leads the conference in service aces with 52, 0.50 ps.

HEAD COACH Jolene Shepardson: San José State head coach Jolene Shepardson is in her fourth season at the helm of the program. She has a 31-61 record in four seasons at SJSU, and a 74-108 coaching record in seven seasons.
SPARTANS START SEASON UNDEFEATED: For the second consecutive season, San José State starts the season with an undefeated record. This year, the team defeated Pepperdine (3-2) and San Francisco (3-1). Last year, the team started the year 3-0 after the first weekend. With a 2-0 record, San José State is one of 64 teams nationally to start the season undefeated.
GÃVIO JOINS THE 29-KILL CLUB: Giulia Gávio 29 kills in the win over Pepperdine on August 25. With that, she is one of just three Spartans in school history to record 29 kills in a match. The other two are Carrie Nash (Oct. 39, 2004 vs. Boise State) and Joslynn Gallop, twice (Sept. 29, 2000 vs. Nevada & October 29, 1999 vs. Hawaii).
GAMA RANKED IN TWO CAREER SJSU BLOCKING LISTS: Two matches into her senior season, Nandyala Gama is rising in the San José State career blocking categories. She began the season in 10th place for block assists and starts the week with 249, 12 short of Alex Akana in ninth place.
Gama started the season by entering the career blocking category. She is 10th with 285, one short of Akana's 286, and 23 away from eighth place.
TOP SINGLE-MATCH MARKS AMONG NATION'S BEST: Two San José State players ranks among the top-10 nationally in single-match performances this season.
