Aug. 31, 2017

The San Jose State University men's water polo team opens its third season since being reinstated as a NCAA Division I sports program by hosting Santa Clara University in the season opener for both teams. The non-conference contest at the West Valley Aquatics Center is Saturday, September 2, at 4:00 p.m. (PT).

Both teams enter the season receiving votes in the Collegiate Water Polo Association preseason coaches poll. The Spartans have opening-day wins over the Broncos in each of the last two seasons.

Head coach Bruce Watson has 11 returning letterwinners from last year's team. Tops among the experienced Spartans is sophomore Ben Hauschild who scored 29 times and came up with 52 steals as San Jose State finished with a 7-21 win-loss record. The Spartans improved from four to seven wins in 2016.

Opening day for San Jose State is a busy one. The Spartans also have an exhibition match scheduled against West Valley College at 2:30 p.m.

Santa Clara is coming off an 11-16 win-loss record and fifth place finish in the Western Water Polo Association league standings.
