Riverside, Calif.-Spartan Fernanda Vido recorded her third consecutive double-double to start the 2017 season as the San José State volleyball team traveled to Southern California for the Fullerton/Riverside Classic.
The Spartans fell at UC Riverside, 3-1 (16-25, 25-15, 25-22, 25-22). The team is now 2-1 on the season.
Vido led the Spartans with 18 kills and added 10 digs. She also had three block assists, one ace and one assist.
Breann Robinson recorded her first start of the season and had a double-double with 46 assists and 11 digs. She added thee kills and a block assist.
Nandyala Gama was the only other Spartan to record double-digit kills with 15 and added three blocks and a digs.
Laura Parts had a season-best nine kills and hit .471 for the match (9-1-17). Thaliana Grajeda added eight digs and two blocks.
The Spartans took the early control of the match, winning the first set 25-16. The team hit .353 for the set (16-4-34). San José State took the lead for good at 9-8 on a Gama kill and opened up the scoring with three more points.
The two teams battled back and forth to start the second set, before the Highlanders took the lead for good at 12-11 and won the set 25-15. UCR dominated the third set, taking the lead from the first serve to win 25-22.
In the final set, the lead changed teams five times, and the score was tied 12 times. No team had more than a three-point lead in the set. UC Riverside took the final lead at 23-22 and scored the final three points of the match.
San Jose State plays two matches in Fullerton on Saturday. The team faces Cal State Fullerton at 11 a.m., followed by Howard at 2 p.m.
