Sept. 17, 2017

Fort Collins, Colo.--Two San José State women's golfers are in the top-10 after the first round of the Colonel Wollenberg's Ptarmigan Ram Classic Sunday at the Ptarmigan Country Club. The Spartans finished the day in fourth place with a two-over 290.

Abegail Arevalo and Franziska Friedrich each shot a one-under 71 and are tied for seventh, fourth shots behind the leader, Avery French from UC Irvine who shot a five-under 67. Arevalo started her round by making birdies on three of her first seven holes and was two-under after her first nine holes (10-18). She played the final nine holes at one-over par with eight pars and a bogey on the par-four #3.

Friedrich started her round par-birdie-double bogey-par-birdie before three pars and a bogey to be one-over after nine holes. She then shot two-under with three birdies, one bogey and five pars over the final nine holes.

Alexandra Cooper and Ysabel Tran are tied for 31st at two-over 74. Cooper started bogey-double bogey but rebounded over the next five holes to make three pars and two birdies. She finished her first nine holes at two-over par and then shot even par over her final nine holes, making a birdie on #1, followed by seven pars and ended with a bogey on #9.

Tran made four bogeys over her first nine holes before rebounding over her final nine holes. She made two birdies and seven pars to shoot two under over her last nine holes.

Elizabeth Schultz rounded out the Spartan scoring with a four-over 76 and is tied for 53rd. After starting her round with three bogeys on her first four holes, she made five consecutive pars to be three-over after nine holes. Schultz started her final nine holes by going bogey-birdie-bogey, three consecutive pars before finishing birdie-par-bogey.

The Spartans are in fourth place at 290, just five shots behind leader UC Irvine who shot a three-under 285. SJSU made 15 birdies and 56 pars on Sunday. The team started the first round on hole 10 and was five over on holes 10-18. On holes 1-9, the Spartans made eight birdies, six bogeys and no double bogeys.

"We got off to a shaky start with a combination of first round nerves and tough starting holes," said Spartan head coach John Dormann. "Abby and Franziska had good, consistent rounds today. Alex and Ysabel did a good job regrouping and finishing with solid scores."

Second round action begins Monday at 8 a.m. MT, with tee times. The Spartans begin off the first tee at 8:45 a.m. MT/7:45 a.m. PT, and play with Wyoming and UNC Greesnboro.
