Sept. 17, 2017
Stockton, Calif.----- San Jose State University first two-match men's soccer road trip of the season was strikingly familiar in both games.
The Spartans trailed 2-0 midway through the second half before a Jeremy Romero goal would make things interesting. On Thursday night at CSUN (Cal State Northridge), San Jose State could not get the equalizer in the final moments of the second half and lost, 2-1.
It was the same 2-1 score against Pacific (7-1) with the Spartans (2-4) returning to San Jose winless for the weekend.
Romero became the first San Jose State player since Rory Knibbs in 2015 to score in three consecutive matches. The senior forward from Hercules, Calif., notched his fifth goal of the season and fourth in three games on a penalty kick at 76:18 for the last score of the match. The Spartans had a couple of possessions with the ball on Pacific's side of the field in the final three minutes, but did not have the equalizer.
Camden Riley with an assist from Bob Groenendijk at 32:31 and Anthony Orendain unassisted on a tap-in in front of the Spartans' goal at 49:58 scored for Pacific (7-1).
Alex Clewis was in goal for San Jose State. He was credited with one first-half save. Curtis Goldsmith for Pacific made two saves in the match for the Tigers.
San Jose State returns to action, Friday, September 22, at the University of San Francisco in a 7:00 p.m. match.
