Utah State as a conference opener: For the fifth time, Utah State is a conference-opening opponent for San Jose State. Besides the 2013 Mountain West opener, the Spartans defeated the Aggies in 2006 and 2007 to open Western Athletic Conference action with a 1-0 record. In 1979, San Jose State and Utah State opened the season as Pacific Coast Athletic Association members and played to a 48-48 tie which was the highest scoring tie game in NCAA history for 12 years until BYU and San Diego State played to a 52-52 tie in 1991.

Utah State-San Jose State connections: New San Jose State University linebackers coach Bojay Filimoeatu played his college football at Utah State during the 2011 and 2012 seasons. Former San Jose State head coaches Dave Baldwin (1997-2000), John Ralston (1993-96) and Terry Shea (1990-91) coached at Utah State. Former Spartan defensive coordinator Kent Baer and offensive line coach Bill Laveroni also coached at both schools.

• The 51-yard field goal is Crawford's career long and matches the fifth longest field goal by a Spartan.
• The 51-yard field goal is the 13th time any San Jose State kicker made a field of 50 or more yards. Crawford's 51-yard field goal was the first field goal of 50 or more yards since Austin Lopez kicked a 50-yard field goal at Wyoming in the 2014 season.
• Crawford's 51-yard field goal matches the ninth longest field goal by a Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) kicker this season.
