Fort Collins, Colo.- The San José State women's golf team shot a three-under 285 in the second round of the Colonel Wollenberg's Ptarmigan Ram Classic and moved into first place Monday afternoon at one-under 575. Two Spartans are in the top-five on the individual leaderboard
The round was a total-team effort at the par-72 Ptarmigan Country Club as three Spartans shot under-par for the day. Abegail Arevalo again led the Spartans with a two-under 70. She is currently tied for second-place on the individual leaderboard at three-under 141, eight shots behind Suthavee Chanachai of New Mexico State who shot a nine-under 63 in the second round.
Arevalo started her first nine hole with a birdie on the par-three #4 and eight pars to be one-under at the turn. She started the back nine with a bogey the birdie before making pars on the next three holes. Arevalo finished the final four holes at birdie-par-bogey-birdie. She leads the tournament field in par-three scoring at four-under par.
Franziska Friedrich is fourth at two-under 142, after shooting her second consecutive 71. She was at even par through her first nine holes of the day, with birdies on #1 and #6, five pars and two bogeys. Friedrich shot one-under par over her final nine holes, making a birdie on the par-four #12 and eight pars.
Alexandra Cooper moved up 18 spots on the individual leader board as she shot a one-under 71, and finished the day tied for 13th at one-over 145. She made three birdies during her first seven holes and was two-under at the turn. Cooper was a three-under after a birdie on the par-five #14, but a double bogey on #16 left her a one-under par for the day. Cooper made four birdies and 12 pars during her second round.
Ysabel Tran shot a two-over 74 and is tied for 23rd at four-over 148. She played her first nine holes at one-under with three birdies, and was a two-under par after 13 holes. Unfortunately, Tran shot double bogey-bogey-bogey over her final three holes.
Elizabeth Schultz also jumped up the leader on Tuesday, 19 spots for her as she shot a one-over 73. She is now five-over, 149 for the tournament and tied for 34th place. Schultz had a strong start to her round with four consecutive pars, then two birdies, then two more pars before a bogey on #9 left her at one-under par for the first nine holes. She made two more birdies over the final nine holes, but four bogeys on those holes left her at one-over par for the day.
The Spartans hold a three-shot lead over New Mexico State who had the low round of the day at four-under 284. The Spartans are the only team in the field under par on the par-three holes and are second on par-five holes at seven under. The team is second in the field in birdies made over the two days with 34.
"We played spectacular golf for 15 holes today," said Spartan head coach John Dormann. "We gave back some strokes on the last three holes today, and we cannot have that happen. We had a good day, and now we need to embrace the challenge on Tuesday of being the leader of the tournament."
Final round action begins Tuesday with a 9 a.m. MT/8 a.m. PT shotgun start. The Spartans will play with New Mexico State and host Colorado State.
