Fort Collins, Colo.--Three San José State women's golfers finished in the top-10 of the Colonel Wollenberg's Ptarmigan Ram Classic on Tuesday as the Spartans ended the tournament in second place at six-under 858.
Abegail Arevalo had her best career finish as she tied for second at eight-under 208. She shot her career-best five-under 67 on Tuesday with four birdies and an eagle during her round. After her first nine holes, she was four under for the day as she started with birdies on the par-four #1 and the par-three #4. Arevalo then made eagle on the par-four #9 to reach four-under, and went birdie-par-birdie to be six under through 12 holes. Over the final six holes, she made five pars and a bogey on the par-four #17.
Franziska Friedrich recorded her second career top-10 finish as she tied for eighth with a one-under 215, and shot a one-over 73 in the final round. After starting her day with a double-bogey on the first hole, Friedrich rebounded by making three pars, two birdies and three pars to be even through nine holes. Over the last nine holes, Friedrich made four pars, three bogeys and back-to-back birdies on #13 and #14.
Elizabeth Schultz recorded just her third career round in the 60s with a four-under 68 and ended in 10th place at one-over par 217. She started her round with a bogey on her first hole (#4) followed by a par and then put together a string of three birdies to be two under through six holes. Schultz made four birdies and just two bogeys over the final 12 holes to finish at 68. Her seven birdies led the Spartans in the final round.
Alexandra Cooper finished tied for 17th at four-over 220. She shot a three-over 75 in the final round, making two birdies during the day.
Ysabel Tran, playing in her first tournament for the Spartans, tied for 32nd at seven-over 222. She also shot a 75 in the final round, making one birdie, 13 pars and four bogeys.
San José State shot a five-under 283 in the final round to finish second to New Mexico State, who shot a 10-under 278 in the final round to win by two shots. The Spartans made 18 birdies and one eagle during the final round and overall tied for second for most birdies made at 52. SJSU led the tournament field in par-four scoring.
"I am proud and pleased with the way we played this week," said Spartan head coach John Dormann. "Congratulations to New Mexico State for winning. They played great and beat us. We have a lot to build on for the season."
San José State next plays at the Ron Moore Intercollegiate, October 6-8, in Highlands Ranch, Colo.
