Volleyball Falls 3-1 in MW Opener At Nevada

Reno, Nev.- Spartan Giulia Gávio recorded her fourth double-double of the season with 14 kills and 11 digs Tuesday night, but the San José State volleyball team dropped its season-opening Mountain West match at Nevada 3-1 (26-24, 25-21, 21-25, 25-16).

Gávio was one of two Spartans in double figure kills, the other Latahevai Lousi with 12. Fernanda Vido added nine kills in the match.

Nandyala Gama moved into seventh place on the San José State career blocking list. She had seven block assists in the match and now has 315 total blocks in her Spartan career. She passed Stephanie Pascussi who had 314 blocks from 1999 to 2002. Gama also increased her career assist total to 275 and needs just four to move into eighth in the Spartan career block assists list. Gama also inched closer to the 1,000-career kill march with nine kills, bringing her Spartan total to 914.

Luiza Andrade led the Spartans with 18 digs, bringing her career total up to 918, and brining down her number to 1,000 digs to 82. Jamie Hirai added 12 digs for the Spartans.

The Spartans hit just .142 for the match with 50 kills on 141 attempts but 30 hitting errors. The team had three service aces but five service errors. The team also outblocked the Wolf Pack 13-11.

The two teams battled during each set. The first set was hard-fought, with the lead changing teams nine times and 15 tied scores. The Spartans had match point at 24-23, but Nevada scored the last three points to win 26-24.The second set was similar to the first, with 12 tied scores and nine lead changes, but Nevada took the lead for good at 17-16 and won 25-21.

The Spartans won the third set 25-21, and led for much of the set. The team took the lead for good at 22-21 and scored the final four points of the set to win. Nevada jumped out to an early lead in the fourth set and had the biggest lead of the set at 25-16 to win the match.

San José State plays at Air Force this Saturday, September 23. First serve is set for 12 p.m. MT/11 a.m. PT.
