Mercep Scores Six Times in Loss to No.2 USC

Los Angeles, Calif.--- San José State's Jacob Mercep scored six goals for the second time this season against No.2 USC in the Mountain Pacific Invitational at the Uytengsu Aquatics Center. It is the most goals USC has given up to a single player since Pacific's, Balazs Erdelyi, scored seven on December, 8 2013. Balazs was on the 2016 Hungarian National Team that participated in the 2016 Summer Olympics. Mercep has 29 points in six games this season for the Spartans.

The San José State University men's water polo team (3-4) was defeated 18-9 by No.2 USC (11-0) in the first round of the Mountain Pacific Invitational. This is the most goals the Trojans have surrendered to a team this season.

Scoring for the Spartans was Justin Pickering, Ben Hauschild, and Stefan Petkovic.

A pair of goals from five Trojans sealed the win for USC. (Marin Dasic, Bryce Hoerman, Grant Stein, Daniel Leong, Tim Leong).

It was a committee affair in goal for the Spartans Friday. TJ Palmer started the game making four saves. Conrad Gordon entered the game in the second half, and made four saves as well. Corey Valencia closed the match in the fourth period, making his first appearance in net this season.

The Spartans compete against UC Santa Barbara Saturday, September 23, at 10:40 a.m. in the Burns Recreation Center.
