Gama Continues Climb Up Career Blocking Lists In 3-2 Win At Air Force Saturday

USAFA, Colo.- Nandyala Gama continued her climb up the San José State career blocking lists with a season-best eight block assists as the Spartan volleyball team defeated Air Force, 3-2 (25-21, 23-25, 25-20, 23-25, 15-7) Saturday afternoon in the Cadet East Gymnasium at the United State Air Force Academy.

Gama led the team with her eight block assists and moved into seventh place on the San José State career block assists list. She started the day in ninth place with 275, but then jumped Kim Hicks in eighth at 279 and Colleen Burke in seventh at 281. Gama now has her sites set on Stephanie Pascucci (6th, 287) and Cristin Rossman (5th, 291).

Gama also needs just one more block on the San José State career total blocks list to pass Hick. Gama ends the weekend with 323 total blocks. After Hicks, Rossman is fifth on the list at 357.

Giulia Gávio recorded her second double-double of the week and fifth of the season as she led the Spartans with 17 kills and added 11 digs. She also had three service aces and a block in the win. Fernanda Vido was the only other Spartan hitter in double-digit kills with 13.

Setter Breann Robinson recorded 43 assists, three service aces and five digs. She recorded a season-best six block assists, combining with Gama for four of her six blocks.

Libero Luiza Andrade led the Spartans with 15 digs, while Jamie Hirai had four of the team's 11 services aces in the match.

The Spartans best hitting sets came in three victorious sets, starting with .409 in set one (11-2-22). The team hit .182 in the third set (13-7-33) and .364 in set five (4-0-11). In the two sets lost, the team hit .080 (10-8-25) and .175 (12-5-40).

San José State is now 8-4 overall and 1-1 in Mountain West play. The team continues on the road next week with matches at San Diego State on Thursday, September 28 at 6 p.m., and at Fresno State next Saturday, September 30, at 1 p.m.
