San Francisco, Calif.----- The doubles pair of sophomore Tamara Culbirk and Julie Vereecke picked up a win for San Jose State University in the Spartans' final day of the Battle In The Bay women's tennis tournament.
Culibrk and Vereecke defeated Roos Nederstight and Maayan Sela of the University of the Pacific, 8-4, in a consolation round match.
"Tamara and Julie played well in doubles today. They both served well and Julie was very active at the net," said San Jose State women's tennis head coach Chad Skorupka.
Culibrk and teammate Laura Mansert each lost in a championship quarterfinal round singles match to a seeded tournament player. Culibrk was defeated by #1-seed Madison Westby of the University of Southern California, 7-5, 6-2. Malsert lost to #2-seed Rebecca Weissmann of USC, 6-2, 6-1.
"Tamara and Laura played really good opponents and didn't capitalize of some opportunities. At this level, if you don't step up, it will cost you," said the Spartans head coach.
"Overall, I was pleased with our play this weekend and look forward to taking the whole team to San Diego."
The Spartans return to tournament action next weekend at the SDSU Classic I hosted by San Diego State, September 29 through October 1.
