Orem, Utah----- For the second consecutive year, the San Jose State University men's soccer team starts Western Athletic Conference action with a point in the standings after tying defending champion Utah Valley, 1-1, in the conference opener for both teams.
Senior Jeremy Romero came through again for the Spartans (2-6-1, 0-0-1 WAC) when he headed teammate Joseph Kay's free kick into the Utah Valley net at 88:33 into the match. For Romero, his only shot of the night turned out to be his team-high sixth goal of the season and ties him with Eric McWoods of UMKC and Danny Musovski of UNLV as the WAC's top goal scorers.
Kris Donaldson and David Heredia teamed up in goal for San Jose State that ended a four-match losing streak, all against non-conference opponents. After a scoreless first half with Donaldson in goal, Heredia played the remainder of the match. Each Spartan goalkeeper made one save. Heredia's was in the first 10-minute overtime.
Utah Valley (3-5-1, 0-0-1 WAC) scored first when Wolverine Alec Felix scored at 66:17. Though the Spartans were outshot 11-7 in regulation play and 14-9 overall, San Jose State overcame a deficit for the first time this season with Romero's goal for the tie with Utah Valley. As a team, Romero's timely score from Kay's first assist in 2017 was just the tenth goal of the season for the Spartans.
San Jose State closes out the weekend at Seattle University, Sunday, October 1, in a 1:00 p.m. (PDT) Western Athletic Conference contest.
