San Diego, Calif.----- The San Jose State University women's tennis team split 12 matches on the first day of the SDSU Fall Tennis Classic I at the Aztec Tennis Center.
The Spartans went 4-4 in singles and 2-2 in doubles action. Freshmen Julie Vereecke and Jacqueline Wagner each won in singles and teamed up for a doubles victory. Sophomore Clara Mantaux was San Jose State's other winner in both singles and doubles.
Vereecke, Wagner, Mantaux and junior Miyo Kobayashi advance to the championship semifinal round in singles action. Senior Sybille Gauvain, sophomore Tamara Culibrk, and freshmen Laura Malsert and Savannah Sendar will be in consolation singles play on Saturday, September 30.
The doubles tandem of Vereecke and Wagner start the second day action in a championship semifinal at 9:00 a.m. Malsert and Mantaux are playing in a round-robin doubles flight and have their second of three matches in the tournament also at 9:00 a.m.
The three-day tournament concludes on Sunday, October 1.
