Gama, Robinson Have Career Days In Volleyball's 3-1 Win At Fresno State

Fresno, Calif.--On a day that saw milestones reached and new career highs set, the San José State volleyball team rallied from an 0-1 deficit to win at Fresno State 3-1 (17-25, 25-18, 25-21, 25-22) Saturday afternoon in a Mountain West match at the Save Mart Center.

Nandyala Gama led the Spartan hitting attack with a career-best 21 kills and hit an outstanding .600 for the match with no hitting errors on 35 attempts. Her 21 kills now gives her 954 kills for her career, 46 short of becoming the 14th player in school history to record 1,000 kills.

Gama also moved up the Spartan career blocking list with her four block assists. She moved past Cristin Rossman and into fifth place all-time with 293 career block assists. Gama also increased her career blocks total to 333 and is in sixth place, 24 behind Rossman's 357.

Setter Breann Robinson also joined elite status among San José State setters as she recorded her 2,000th career assist in the fourth set. She is one of just 12 players in school history to reach this milestone.

Robinson ended the match with 45 assists and now has 2,014 career assists. She was also crucial for the Spartan offense, finding the holes in the Bulldog defense to record a career-best seven kills on nine attempts. Robinson also had three blocks in the win.

The Spartans hit a season-high .405 for the match with 65 kills and 121 attempts and only 16 errors. Two other Spartans had double-digit kill nights and hit above .300. Laura Parts hit .407 with a career-best 16 kills on 27 attempts and five errors. Giulia Gávio hit .308 with 13 kills on 26 swings and five errors.

After falling 25-17 in set one and never having the lead, the Spartans came out in the second set and took control at 3-2 on a Parts kill. The team never looked back, winning the second set 25-18.

The third set was a battle between the two teams. Fresno State got out to an early 14-10 lead, but the Spartans went on a 6-0 run to take the lead a 16-14 lead. The Bulldogs tied the match at 17-17, another Parts kill gave the Spartans the lead for good at 18-17 and SJSU won the set 25-21.

In the fourth set, Robinson joined her elite 2,000 career assist club, and the Spartans took the lead from the very first serve on a Gama kill. Parts ended the match with her 16th kill and gave the Spartans the win at 25-22.

Others Spartans contributing included Luiza Andrade who had 19 digs, six assists and two aces. She gets closer to 1,000 career digs, ending the day with 972 digs. Arianna Newcomb also had two aces and three digs, while Jamie Hirai added seven digs, three assists and an aces.

San José State is now 11-4 overall and 3-1 in the MW, the best start since joining the conference for the 2013 season. It is the best start to the season through the month of September since the 2001 team finished September with an 11-2 record. It is also the third consecutive year the Spartans ended September with a winning record.

The Spartans return home next week for matches against UNLV on Thursday, October 5 at 6 p.m., and New Mexico on Saturday, October 7 at noon. All matches are played in Spartan Gym, inside the YUH Complex on the corner of Fourth and San Carlos Streets. Admission is free.
