San José State vs. the Big 12: San José State has an all-time record of 3-7 against current Big 12 Conference members.

The Spartans have wins over Kansas State in 1963, at Baylor in 1980, 30-22, when the Bears were undefeated and ranked #10 in the Associated Press (A.P.) poll, and against TCU, 27-24 on November 4, 2000, when the Horned Frogs were members of the Western Athletic Conference and came into the game with running back LaDainian Tomlinson, undefeated and ranked #9 by A.P.

Last year, San José State lost at Iowa State, 44-10, for their fourth loss in the series to the Cyclones.

San José State-Texas coaching ties: Former coaches John Mackovic, Dwain Painter, Greg Robinson and Dick Tomey worked at San José State University and the University of Texas during their coaching careers. Current San José State offensive coordinator Andrew Sowder was a member of the 2016 University of Texas coaching staff.

Comebacks: In both San José State games this season, the winning team was scoreless in the first quarter and took the lead for good before halftime. The Spartans led #19-ranked USF (South Florida), 16-0, after one quarter before losing 42-22. San José State trailed Cal Poly, 3-0 at the end of the first quarter and 6-0 in the second, before moving on to a 34-13 victory.

It was hot: The game time temperature for the September 2 San José State-Cal Poly game at CFECU Stadium in San José was recorded as 108 degrees. Previous to that game, the last time San José State played in a game with 100-plus degree weather was on September 1, 2007 in a 45-3 loss at Arizona State when the evening temperature was 101 degrees at kickoff.

Busiest defense in FBS football: Two games has a lot do with it, but San José State's defense has faced more snaps to date than any other Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) team in games played through September 3. Two Spartan opponents have combined for 171 snaps. Oregon State and Hawai'i are next closest at 164. Despite the number of plays for the San José State defense, the Spartans are credited with forcing 20 punts and recovering three fumbles in their first two games.

Takeaways matter: The San José State defense recovered three fumbles and turned them into 14 points in the 34-13 win over Cal Poly. In the opener vs. USF, the Spartans were intercepted three times that would result in 14 points being scored against them in a 42-22 loss.

Two games, three quarterbacks: In San José State's first two games, three quarterbacks were used. Sophomore Josh Love started each game.

Redshirt freshman Montel Aaron played the fourth quarter of the USF contest and entered the Cal Poly game on the Spartans first possession of the second quarter.

Sophomore Sam Allen made his first appearance as a Spartan quarterback for the final series of the Cal Poly win. Based on available records dating back to the 1970's, Allen is the first known San José State player to play as a special teams defender and at quarterback in the same game. Allen is a member of the Spartans' punt coverage unit.
