VOLLEYBALL TRAVELS TO IOWA FOR DRAKE INVITATIONAL: The San José State volleyball team travels to Des Moines, Iowa, this weekend for the Drake Invitational. The Spartans face Omaha and Drake on Friday, September 8, and Montana on Saturday, September 9.

The Spartans enter the tournament with a 4-1 overall record and a two-match winning streak. The team went 2-1 last weekend at the Fullerton/Riverside Classic, where the team lost to UC Riverside, 3-1, but then defeated Cal State Fullerton, 3-0, and Howard, 3-0.

ABOUT OMAHA: The Mavericks begin the tournament with a 2-4 overall record and a two-match winning streak after defeating Indiana State twice last weekend, 3-1 and 3-2. Head coach Rose Shires is in her 28th season at the helm of the program. Mackenzie Horkey leads the team in kills with 63, 3.00 per set, while Anna Blaschko is the team leader in blocks sith 17, 0.81 ps.

ABOUT DRAKE: The Bulldogs begin the tournament with a 5-2 record and went 2-1 last weekend at the JMU Invitational, the only loss coming to the host-school JMU. Head coach Darrin McBroon is in his fifth season at the school. Kyla Inderski leads the team with 76 kills, 3.04 ps, while Elle Tubbs is the team's blocking leader with 20, 0.87 ps.

ABOUT MONTANA: The Griz begin the week with a 3-3 overall record. Last weekend, the team defeated Long Beach State, 3-0, before falling at Utah Valley, 3-0, and to #9 Kansas, 3-0. Head coach Allison Lawrence is in her first season at the helm of the program after serving seven years as an assistant. Mykaela Hammer leads the team in kills with 64, 3.05 ps. Baily Permann had a team-best 21 blocks, 1.00 ps.

HEAD COACH Jolene Shepardson: San José State head coach Jolene Shepardson is in her fourth season at the helm of the program. She has a 33-62 record in four seasons at SJSU, and a 76-109 coaching record in seven seasons.

VIDO MAKING IMMEDIATE IMPACT: Redshirt sophomore transfer Fernanda Vido has made an immediate impact on the Spartan team after transferring from Eastern Washington. She currently leads the team with 81 kills, 4.26 ps, and is second on the team in digs with 50, 2.63 ps. In the five matches place this season, Vido has recorded double-doubles in four of them. She had a season-best 24 kills in the win at San Francisco.

GAMA RECORDS STRONG HITTING WEEKEND: Nandyala Gama hit .375 last week at the Fullerton/Riverside Classic. For the three matches, she averaged 4.70 kills and 5.35 points per set. Gama led the Spartans in kills with 16 in wins over Cal State Fullerton and Howard. Against the Titans, she hit .519 with 16 kills on 27 attempts and only two errors.

PARTS HIT OFF THE CHART: Redshirt freshman Laura Parts made an impact with her swing last weekend at the Fullerton/Riverside Classic. In three matches, she hit .479 with 26 kills on 48 swings and only three errors. Against Cal State Fullerton, she hit .733 with 11 kills on 15 attempts and no hitting errors. For the season, Parts is hitting .317.

UP NEXT: The Spartans return to the South Bay for three matches as part of the SCU/SJSU Tournament. The Spartans travel to Santa Clara for a match against #7 Kansas on Friday, September 15, at 1 p.m. The team then returns to Spartan Gym that night for a match against Idaho at 7 p.m. On Saturday, September 16, San José State and Santa Clara play each other at Spartan Gym beginning at 7 p.m.
