Volleyball Wins Drake Invitational With 3-0 Win Over Montana

Des Moines, Iowa- With a 3-0 win over Montana Saturday morning, the San José State volleyball team completed a sweep of opponents at the Drake Invitational to win the tournament title.

Giulia Gávio led San José State in hitting against Montana with 19 kills and hit .472 (19-2-36). She was the Spartan offense with 19 of the team's 36 kills.

Nandyala Gama and Ryann Thomison each had three block assists to led the team. Luiza Andrade had team-bests of 17 digs and three service aces. Breann Robinson recorded 29 assists, four digs and two blocks.

San José State led from the first serve of sets one and two. The third set was a little more challenging in the beginning with two lead changes and 11 tied scores. Montana led 15-12 after a San José State timeout before the Spartans scored 13 of the next 17 points to win the set 25-19 and the match.

With the win, the Spartans have won five consecutive matches and have a 7-1 overall record. This is one of the best starts in recent years as last year's team started 6-2, the 2006 and 2004 teams were 7-2, and the 2001 team was 11-2. The 1999 team had the best start in school history when the team started the season 18-1 and finished 25-6.

The winning streak will be tested next weekend at the SCU/SJSU Tournament. The Spartans face #7 Kansas on Friday, September 15, at 1 p.m. at the Leavey Center on the Santa Clara campus. The team returns to Spartan Gym that night for a match against Idaho at 7 p.m. On Saturday, September 16, the Spartans host the Broncos at 7 p.m., inside Spartan Gym.
