San Jose, Calif. --- The San Jose State women's soccer team rallied to beat Nevada, 2-0, in Mountain West play on Friday morning at the Spartan Soccer Complex.
After a scoreless first half it took the Spartans less that two minutes to get on the board. Yaritza Arista sent a free kick arching from right to left in front of the net and off the head of Nevada's Morgan Beye for an own-goal.
With a 1-0 lead in the 62nd minute it was Arista again who had the ball in open space. This time she fired a shot from around 25 yards out and tucked it inside the upper-left corner of the goal. It was the first tally of the season for Arista who is the team's assist leader with five.
San Jose State (8-5-1, 5-1-1 MW) dominated Nevada (1-14-0, 0-7-0 MW) in the shot column, 31-5. It was a balanced attacking effort as 14 different Spartans registered a shot with Dorthe Hoppius leading the way with six. SJSU put nine of its 31 shots on goal.
Paige Simoneau is credited with the shutout despite not facing a shot on goal. It is Simoneau's third shutout during Mountain West play.
First-place San Jose State is back in action on Sunday against second-place UNLV. The match was originally scheduled for 12:00 p.m., but has been moved up to 10:00 a.m. due to the air quality from the North Bay Fires.
