Sunnyvale, Calif. -- Ten times sophomore Jennifer Sandoval has raced for the San José State women's cross country team, and each time she has been the first Spartan to cross the finish line. On Saturday, she was also the first runner to cross the line...period, leading the team to its third straight victory of the season.
"We have had solid, consistent training and that translates into solid, consistent racing, which in turn leads to good results," head coach Brad Wick said. "We did a very nice job today."
The win was the second of the year for Sandoval, who in four races in 2017 has finished no worse that sixth. She was victorious in a time of 20:18.3.
"It was a nice job by everyone," head coach Brad Wick said. "Jenny did what we've come to expect. Jeanette (Zambrano) was in it early on and she paid a bit of a price later, but I was happy she tried something tactically different today. (Adilene Aldapa) was a bit under the weather and sat back a bit more, but was still strong enough to be within striking distance through out."
Aldapa finished fourth in 20:39.4 and Zambrano was 6th in 20:40.4.
Kai Bohannon, the fourth SJSU runner tofinish, crossed the line in tenth in a time of 20:46.3, the first top-10 finish of her collegiate career. "Kai really stepped up," Wick said. "She was right with Jeanette and Adie, never more than 10 seconds behind."
Carmen Contreras, in 39th place in 21:28.9, was the final Spartan to score and secured the team's third win in a row. "Carmen has been under the weather all week, but she stepped up today and was really solid for us," Wick said.
Camilla Hanson and Mikayla Akers finished in 91st (22:31.1) and 121st (23:53.3), respectively.
Next up for San Jose State is the Mountain West Championships on October 27 in Albuquerque, N.M.
