Denver, Colo.----- San Jose State University defender Andy Rios, who was instrumental in the team's first conference win of the season, was named the Western Athletic Conference men's soccer Defensive Player of the Week.
A junior from Chowchilla, Calif., Rios was in the middle of the Spartans' 1-0 shutout over Houston Baptist on Sunday, October 15. The victory was San Jose State's second shutout of the season, was the Spartans' first road win of the season, and improved the team's record to 3-9-1 and 1-3-1 in the WAC.
Houston Baptist attempted 13 shots in the match, but none were judged as shots on goal thanks to one of the team's best overall defensive efforts of the season.
San Jose State returns to action this weekend with conference road contests at Incarnate Word on Friday, October 20, and UTRGV on Sunday, October 22. Both matches will be streamed on the WAC Digital Network.
