Oct. 16, 2017

Pebble Beach, Calif.- Franziska Friedrich shot a two-under 69 and is tied for fourth place after the first round of the Stanford Invitational at the Poppy Hills Golf Club in Pebble Beach. Friedrich and the Spartans are in fourth place after shooting a nine-over 293 on the par-71 course Monday.

Friedrich shot even or under par the entire first round. Starting on #10, she made a birdie on her first hole, a par on #11, a bogey on #12 and six straight pars to finish her first nine holes at even par. Over her final nine holes (#1-9), she made seven pars and birdies on #3 and #5 for her best round of the 2017-18 season.

Alexandra Cooper is tied for 12th at one-over 72. She too made seven pars, one bogey and one birdie (#13) over her first nine holes of the round. Cooper made one more birdie on #2, two bogeys and six pars to finish one-over par.

Elizabeth Schultz and Ysabel Tran each shot a five-over 76 and are tied for 42nd. Despite starting her round with a double bogey, Schultz rebounded over her next eight holes by making six pars, a birdie and a bogey. She finished the round with 12 pars and two birdies made. Tran sank just one birdie over her 18 holes but made 13 pars during the round.

Abegail Arevalo shot a seven-over 78 and is tied for 62nd. She made two birdies and four pars over her first nine holes and was one-over after nine holes. However, holes #1 and #3 gave her problems as she was five-over on those two holes.

The Spartans shot a nine-over 293 and are 13 shots behind leader and host Stanford who shot a four-under 280. UCLA is second at four-over 288, followed by Washington at seven-over 291.

Individually, Friedrich is three shots behind leader Hannah Kim of Northwestern who shot a five-under 66. Kim made five birdies and 13 pars for her round.

"Franziska played great today, outstanding play for her. I thought we hit the ball really well today and executed our plan pretty well. It was a wayward shots on the par-5 holes that hurt us. We have to be better on those holes and make birdies. There were way too many big numbers for us today," said Spartan head coach John Dormann.

Second round action begins at 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday. The Spartans begin Tuesday off of hole one at 8:25 a.m., playing with UC Davis and California.
