Two Spartans In Top-20 At Stanford Intercollegiate

Oct. 17, 2017

Pebble Beach, Calif.- Franziska Friedrich and Alexandra Cooper remain in the top-20 individually at the Stanford Intercollegiate as the San José State women's golf team shot a 296 in the second round and is seventh after two rounds at the Poppy Hills Golf Club in Pebble Beach.

Friedrich shot a five-over 76 and is tied for 14th at three-over 145. Her first nine holes found her at four-over par with four bogeys and five pars. She then made three birdies over her final nine holes to go with two pars and four bogeys to finish the day at 76.

Cooper shot a three-over 74 and is tied for 19th at four-over 146. She started the day with a birdie on #1, but did not make another until the par-four #16. Cooper recorded 11 pars and five bogeys during the round.

Abegail Arevalo was six shots better in the second round and shot the team's low score of the day with a one-over 72. She is tied for 43rd at 150. Arevalo was steady over her first nine holes, making eight pars and bogey, before shooting even par over the final nine holes with three birdies, three pars and three bogeys.

Ysabel Tran had another solid round with a three-over 74 and is tied for 43rd at 150. Despite starting the day three-over for her first nine holes (one birdie, four pars, four bogeys), she rebounded over the final nine holes to shoot even par - one birdie, seven pars and a bogey.

Elizabeth Schultz shot a nine-over 80 and is tied for 66th at 156. She started the day with a birdie on the par-five #1, but did not see another red number the rest of the day. Schultz made nine pars, six bogeys and two double bogeys during the round.

"I thought we played the back nine pretty well today after a rough start. We are playing the difficult holes well including one-under on #10, the hardest hole of the day. We need to have the same focus on the par-5 holes and with our short irons. We need all five players playing well tomorrow to have a good finish," said Spartan head coach John Dormann.

Stanford continues to lead the tournament with a one-under 567. UCLA is second at six-over 574, followed by Northwestern at eight-over 576. Individually, Hannah Kim has a four-shot lead at six-under 136, four shots better than five players tied for second at two-under par.

Third round action begins Wednesday at 7:30 a.m.
