San José, Calif.-- It took the San José State volleyball team just 83 minutes to sweep Nevada 3-0 (25-18, 26-24, 25-21) Tuesday evening in a Mountain West match at Spartan Gym.
Giulia Gávio led the Spartans with 12 kills in the match, while setter Breann Robinson had a team-best five block assists to go with her 35 assists, seven digs, three kills and a service ace. Thaliana Grajeda led the team in hitting at .667 with nine kills on 12 attempts and only one error.
The Spartans never trailed by more than a point in the first set. The teams were tied 13-13 before the Spartans went on a 12-3 run to win 25-18 on a Grajeda kill.
In the second set, Nevada began by going out to an 8-3, scoring seven consecutive points, before Nandyala Gama put one down to stop the run. The Wolf Pack led by five again at 11-6, but the Spartans slowly came back in the set, tying it at 22-22. Behind the strong serving of Jamie Hirai, SJSU led 24-22, but Nevada tied the set at 24-24. A Fernanda Vido kill and Wolf Pack hitting error gave San José State the 26-24 win.
The lead changed teams only twice with the Spartans taking the lead for good at 8-7 and leading by as many as six during the set. A Grajeda kill gave San José State match point at 24-20, but a Spartan hitting error prolonged the eventual win by one point as Nevada then served the ball into the next for the Spartan victory.
San José State is now 13-7 on the season and 5-4 in the MW. The team hosts Air Force this Thursday, October 19, at 6 p.m., inside Spartan Gym, located on the corner of Fourth and San Carlos Streets. Admission is free to the match.
