Stanford, Calif.----- San Jose State University was 3-for-3 in doubles play on the first day of the ITA (Intercollegiate Tennis Association) Northwest Regional Championships taking place at the Taube Family Tennis Center on the Stanford University campus.
Two Spartan pairs playing together for the first time this season, Clara Mantaux and Jacqueline Wagner and Sybille Gauvain and Miyo Kobayashi, were winners. Sophomore Tamara Culibrk and freshman Laura Malsert also won their first round doubles match.
All three doubles teams advance to second round action Friday, October 20, starting at 9:00 a.m. Manatux & Wagner take on the Cal duo of Jasie Dunk and Maria Smith; Gauvain and Kobayashi face Seattle University's Kyra Jung and Kelli Woodman; and Culibrk and Malsert square off against Maria Kozyreva and Aubane Ville of Saint Mary's.
The Spartans also had success in singles play. Gauvain as the #3-seed in the 128-player draw had a first round bye. She advanced to Friday's third round with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Sacramento State's Sofia Wicker Velez.
Malsert needed three sets each to defeat Grace Olyphant of Cal Poly, 6-7 (7), 6-2, 6-2, and Isabella vonEbbe of UC Davis, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3, to advance to the third round. Kobayashi was a straight set winner over Sacramento State's Maria Gonzalez, but lost to Maddie Pothoff of Santa Clara, 7-6(4), 6-3.
Mantaux, Wagner, Culibrk and Sendar lost their first round singles match.
