El Paso, Texas--- The San José State University men's golf team is in ninth place through round one at Price's Give Em Five Invitational. The team shot four-over par 288 at the par 71, 7,307-yard Butterfield Trail Golf Club.
"We didn't execute the way we wanted to," said Spartan head coach John Kennaday. "We will try to battle back tomorrow."
Leading the Spartans, tied in 13th place at one-under par, is Sean Yu. He shot 70 in round one with three birdies in the tournament.
Bryce Wortman, and Sean Talmadge are tied for 27th at one-over par 72. Wortman made his Spartan debut in the tournament.
"Bryce played well," said Coach Kennaday. "He stayed with the game plan. He is a fine young man with a lot of potential."
Vijay Srinivasan is tied for 52nd place shooting three over par 74. Kevin Velo is tied for 68th at five over par.
Playing individually for the Spartans, and not contributing to the team score is Ben Campbell and Matthew Murray. Campbell is tied for 52nd at three-over par. Murray is tied for 39th at two-over par.
University of Texas El Paso is nine-under par, and currently leads the tournament by one stroke over second place Texas State.
On top of the players leaderboard at seven-under par is Calvin Ross of Texas State, and Charles Corner of Texas El Paso. Ross was 10 under par before he bogeyed his final three holes in the tournament.
