San Antonio, Texas ----- Junior Zach Penner scored a goal and assisted on another in the second half leading San Jose State University to a 2-0 win over the University of Incarnate Word in a Western Athletic Conference men's soccer match.
The win for the Spartans (4-9-1, 2-3-1 WAC) was their second shutout win in five days and gave the team its first winning streak of the season.
Penner helped break a scoreless tie in the 59th minute with his cross to teammate Jeremy Romero who fired a shot to the left past Incarnate Word goalkeeper Brendan Brown. For Romero, it was his team-high seventh goal and his first in five matches.
Penner gave San Jose State some insurance when he headed a free kick from Joseph Kay into the cage in the 79th minute for his second goal of the season. The win over Incarnate Word (3-10-1, 1-6-0 WAC) marked the first time at the major college level Penner had a goal and an assist in a match.
David Heredia made two saves in goal for his second road shutout in five days for the Spartans. Incarnate Word goalkeeper Brown had one save.
San Jose State also moved a spot in the conference standings to ninth place and can vault into the top half of the conference standings with a win Sunday, October 22, at UTRGV. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. (CT). The last time the Spartans won three in a row was in 2012.
