Stanford, Calif.----- For San Jose State University senior Sybille Gauvain, the second day of the ITA (Intercollegiate Tennis Association) Northwest Regional Championships was her best day of the early season.
Gauvain, the team's only senior, won two singles matches and teamed with junior Miyo Kobayashi for the only 8-0 shutout of Seattle University's Kyra Jung and Kelli Woodman in the second round of doubles action.
"Sybille advancing to the quarterfinals (in singles) for the second year in a row is great," said San Jose State women's tennis head coach Chad Skorupka about the Spartans' top player seeded #3 in singles in the tournament and ranked #50 nationally in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings. "She got off to a great start in both her matches and that set the tone for her."
Gauvain, who played in the semifinal round in singles at the 2016 ITA Northwest regional Championships, knocked off Maria Kozyreva of Saint Mary's in straight sets, 7-5, 6-0 to reach the quarterfinals. To start her day in singles, Gauvain defeated Kristy Jorgensen of UC Davis, 6-0, 6-4.
Sophomore Tamara Culibrk and freshman Laura Malsert are joining Gauvain and Kobayashi in quarterfinal round action in doubles on October 21. Culibrk and Malsert topped the Saint Mary's pair of Kozyreva & Aubane Ville, 8-6.
"We got off to a good start today winning two out of three doubles matches," said the Spartans head coach. The Spartan pair of Clara Mantaux and Jacqueline Wagner lost to Cal's Jasie Dunk and Maria Smith, 8-4.
Culibrk, Jacqueline Wagner and Clara Mantaux were winners in consolation round singles play.
Overall, San Jose State was a combined 7-2 in second-day action.
Third-day action in the five-day tournament begins Saturday, October 21 at 10:00 a.m. with quarterfinal round doubles play.
