Edinburg, Texas. ----- San Jose State University's Andrew Mendoza scored the only goal of the match in the 72nd minute as the Spartans defeated University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, 1-0, in a Western Athletic Conference men's soccer match.
The San Jose State victory was the third in a row over the last eight days. The Spartans (5-9-1, 3-3-1) have a three-match winning streak for the first time since the 2012 season. All three wins occurred on the road -- a first since 2011.
Mendoza scored his second goal of the season after taking a long pass from teammate Nicolas Brenes. Mendoza raced down the right side and beat the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley goalkeeper Andy Rios for the only score in the contest.
Goalkeeper David Heredia picked up the third shutout of the season for San Jose State. He was credited with three saves on 10 shots by the Vaqueros. UTRGV goalkeeper Andy Rios, not related to San Jose State defender Andy Rios, had two saves.
The Spartan win was in their final road match of the regular season and moved San Jose State into a fourth place tie with CSU Bakersfield at 11 points with three home matches remaining. The top seven teams in the 11-team conference advance to the WAC Tournament in Las Vegas next month.
