Las Vegas, Calif.--Four of the five San José State women's golfers are in the top-20 after the first round of the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown on Sunday. The Spartans shot a season-best 10-under 278 and finished the day in third place, three shots behind leader Missouri.

Elizabeth Schultz shot a season-low five-under 67 and is tied for third place. She shot a bogey-free round with five birdies and 12 pars. Starting her round on number six, Schultz started the day by making five straight pars (6-10) before making four birdies over the next eight holes (11-18). She finished the round with four pars and a birdie on #2.

Alexandra Cooper is tied for ninth place at three-under 69, tying for her best career score for a round. She started the day on hole five, and went par-bogey to start the round. Then she made five straight bogeys before going birdie-par-birdie on holes 12-14. Cooper then made five more pars before ending birdie-par-birdie to end at three-under par.

Franziska Friedrich and Abegail Arevalo each shot a one-under 71 and are tied for 19th place. Starting her day #4, Friedrich made par on her first hole, then made three consecutive birdies (#5-7), five straight pars (#8-12) and then birdie-par before making back-to-back bogeys, par and double bogey (#18). She finished her round by going par-birdie-par.

Arevalo also started on #4, and played her first nine holes (#4-12) at three-over par with three bogeys and six pars. She then made three birdies and three pars over the next six holes and finished bogey-birdie-par.

Ysabel Tran rounded out the Spartan scoring with an even par 72, her best round of the season, and tying for 31st place. She started the day on #5 with a bogey, but then made 10 pars over her next 12 holes with a birdie on #8 and a bogey on #18. Tran then ended the round with three pars and a birdie on #2.

San José State is third at 10-under par 278, three shots behind leader Missouri and only one shot behind host UNLV. In all, seven teams posted team scores under par for the round.

"We had a nice first round. After dealing with the wind early in our round, the wind died down and made the course easier to shoot low scores. It was great to see Elizabeth have a great round. We need everyone playing well to keep up on this course, and today was a good start," said Spartan head coach John Dormann.

The Spartans begin the second round with an 8 a.m. shotgun on Monday. The Spartans play with Missouri and host UNLV off of holes 1, 2 and 3. Fan can follow live scoring at https://www.birdiefire.com/tournament/41991/.
