Malibu, Calif.----- Colleen Humel's three individual event victories powered San Jose State University to a rare sweep of all 16 events at the Malibu Invitational women's swimming meet.
Humel finished first in the 200, 50 and 100 backstroke races and swam two legs on the Spartans' first-place 300-yard free relay team. In the two-day meet, she was the top winner with four individual event victories starting with the 400 IM on October 20.
Jenna Lloyd in the 100 and 200 breast, Brittany Heng in the 50 and 100 free, Brenna Bushey in the 50 and 100 fly and Taylor Lehr in the 200 and 500 free were four more multiple-event winners.
"I am really happy with our performance this weekend. I can honestly say this was our best overall team performance in a couple of years. Our times obviously aren't what they will be at the end of the season," said San Jose State University women's swimming and diving head coach Sage Hopkins. The Spartans had first-place finishers in the two events on the first day followed by 14 more on the final day of the invitational. "However, the poise, confidence, and tenacity we showed consistently is remarkable.
"I feel we are starting to see a young team really figuring out what it means to perform in competition."
Kendal Guy in the 200 fly, freshman Shona Spikes in the 50 breast and Violani Auva'a in the 100 IM were first-place finishers, too. Spikes, freshman Katrina Slivkoff and Erin Wayman joined Humel on the winning 300 free relay swim.
The Spartans' next meet is the Pacific Invitational in Stockton, Calif., Friday, October 27, and Saturday, October 28.
