Goalkeeper David Heredia who anchored a pair of San Jose State University shutout wins in conference play was named the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week.
The junior from San Jose's Andrew Hill High School made two saves in the Spartans' 2-0 win at Incarnate Word on Friday, October 20. Two days later, he stopped three shots on goal in a 1-0 victory at UTRGV to give San Jose State its first three-match winning streak since 2012.
Heredia is the first Spartan goalkeeper in three years to be credited with three shutouts in a season as San Jose State pulled into a fourth-place tie with CSU Bakersfield in the WAC standings with 10 points. For the season, Heredia has a 1.16 goals against average in seven game appearances.
Heredia is the second Spartan to be named the Western Athletic Conference Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week. On October 16, defenseman Andy Rios earned the honor after San Jose State's 1-0 shutout of Houston Baptist to start the team's current winning streak.
San Jose State (5-9-1, 3-3-1 WAC) currently owns the conference's longest winning streak at three games -- all on the road. The Spartans are home for a pair of matches this week. San Jose State hosts conference co-leader Air Force (11-1-3, 5-0-2 WAC) on October 27 at 12:00 p.m. (PT) and Kansas City (formerly UMKC), currently tied for sixth, Sunday, October 29, at 1:00 p.m. (PT).
