Las Vegas, Calif.--Surviving a windy final round, Spartan Ysabel Tran made birdies on four of her final five holes and helped the San José State women's golf team to a second-place finish at the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown at the Boulder Creek Golf Course in Boulder City, Nev.
Tran was the only Spartan player to shoot under par on Tuesday with her one-under 71. She finished the tournament at even-par 216, tying for 16th place. Tran started her final round by making six straight pars before back-to-back bogeys on #9 and 10. She made four more pars and a bogey before finishing birdie-birdie-par-birdie-birdie (#15-16-17-18-1-2).
"Ysabel made some nice birdies to help us out today," said Spartan head coach John Dormann. "She hit a 10-footer on #16 for a birdie, almost had a hole-in-one on #17, just missed a 40-foot birdie on the 18th as the putt slid just past the hole, hit a 50-footer up a tier for a birdie on #1 and hit to the back of the green on #2 (par 5) in two, chipped to within six feet and drilled the putt."
Elizabeth Schultz was the team's top finisher at the tournament as she tied for sixth place at four-under 212. She shot a three-over 75 in the final round, making three birdies, nine pars and six bogeys.
Alexandra Cooper also had her best finish of the semester as she tied for ninth at three-under 213. She also shot a three-over 75 for the final round, making two birdies, five bogeys and 11 pars.
Franziska Friedrich shot a two-over 74 in the final round to tie for 20th place at one-over 217. She started with a birdie on her first hole of the day, #2. Friedrich also made
Abegail Arevalo rounded out the Spartan lineup by finishing tied for 36th at three-over 219. She shot a three-over 75 in the final round that featured just two birdies and 11 pars made.
Overall, the Spartans finished second at seven-under 857, 10 shots behind winner and host UNLV who shot -17, 847, for the three rounds. The Spartans were second by two shots over Missouri and five shots in front of Idaho.
"We had a consistent wind throughout the round today that we had need seen earlier in the week, a two-club wind," said Dormann. "I thought we played the first nine holes really well, especially #6, 7 and 8 since they were playing really hard. But we seemed to fall asleep on some of the easier holes, and no one could really bounce back at the end.
"We had three great tournaments this semester and one we wish we could do over. Overall, we were pretty successful. Everyone contributed and had good scores. Now, we are going to take a break, concentrate on school and get back at it in January."
The Spartans played their final tournament of the 2017 schedule and will take a break to study, practice and finish the fall semester. The team returns to action next February for the Bruin Wave Invitational in San Luis Obispo, Calif., February 26 and 27.
