San Jose State University, the hottest men's soccer team in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC), hosts Air Force, the conference's best team, in an important contest for both teams Friday, October 27. Kickoff is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. at the Spartan Soccer Complex located near the corner of 10th & Alma.
The Spartans (5-9-1, 3-3-1 WAC) have the longest winning streak in the conference after notching its third win in a row, a 1-0 decision at UT Rio Grande Valley on October 22. The three San Jose State wins came on the road and all by shutout.
Andrew Mendoza scored the game winner at UT Rio Grande Valley; Jeremy Romero, the same at Incarnate Word, and Carlos Valdovinos, at Houston Baptist to get the winning streak started.
Sophomore David Heredia was in goal for all three contests and was named the WAC Defensive Player of the Week on October 23 for keeping clean sheets against UT Rio Grande Valley and Incarnate Word on October 20 in a 2-0 triumph. For the season, Heredia has a 1.08 goals against average, third best in the WAC.
Heredia also is in the running for the Hero Sports NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Hero of the Week award hosted at www.herosports.com.
San Jose State hosts an Air Force team (11-1-3, 5-0-2 WAC) ranked 15th nationally. The Falcons only loss this season was a 1-0 outcome vs. Furman on September 3. The San Jose State contest is just the fourth on the road all season for Air Force. So far, the Falcons are 0-0-3 on the road and are averaging 1.00 goals per game.
Air Force goalkeeper John Wendt is second in the WAC with a 0.78 goals against average and has five shutouts. Tucker Bone is the Falcons' leading scorer with five goals and six assists.
A San Jose State win would give the Spartans their first four-match winning streak since 2009 when that team won seven in a row and put the squad in an excellent position to be one of the seven teams to advance to the WAC Tournament, November 8-12 in Las Vegas. Presently, the Spartans are tied with CSU Bakersfield for fourth place with 10 points.
San Jose State closes out its week of action hosting Kansas City (UMKC) on Sunday, October 29, at the Spartan Soccer Complex starting at 1:00 p.m.
