Moment of silence: Prior to the playing of the national anthem at Saturday's game vs. San Diego State, San Jose State University will observe a moment of silence in memory of Robert W. (Bob) Foy (September 18, 1936 - June 9, 2017). The 1959 San Jose State graduate was a member of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity, served in the U.S. Army, was president of Pacific Storage Company of Stockton, Calif., from 1977 to 1995 and was named Chairman of the Board for California Water Service Group from 1996 to 2012. The California Water Service Group established an endowment in his name to provide scholarship assistance to San Jose State University student-athletes.
Series history: The series is tied, 19-19-2. San Diego State has wins in the last four meetings between these teams including a 42-3 triumph in San Diego last year.
The Spartans' last win in the series was a 38-34 triumph in San Diego on September 22, 2012. The San Jose State win in San Jose was a 35-10 win on September 13, 2008.
First home game in a month: San Jose State returns to CEFCU Stadium for its first home game since the October 7 Homecoming Game vs. Fresno State. The Spartans played half of its six home games by the end of September.
Magnificient seven: After nine games, just seven Spartans started in every game. Left tackle Troy Kowalski and right guard Chris Gonzalez are the only two on offense. Linebackers William Ossai, Frank Ginda and Ethan Aguayo, cornerback Andre Chachere and safety Maurice McKnight are the defensive players to start in each of the first nine games. Thirty-seven (37) players, not counting the special teams positions, have at least one starting game assignment this season.
Brent Brennan & quarterback Michael Carrillo - guest speakers at "Powering Silicon Valley": Head coach Brent Brennan, quarterback Michael Carrillo, a business administration major, and Cam Radford, the football team's director of football digital communications, are three of the guest speakers participating in "Powering Silicon Valley," a November 3 symposium at San Jose State University.
The symposium will highlight the collaboration between academics and athletics with an emphasis on science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM) behind sports and entertainment. Specific program information is available at www.steamsportsgroup.com.
Spreading the ball around: In the last two games at Hawai'i on October 14 and at BYU on October 28, San Jose State involved many pass receivers. At Hawai'i, the Spartans matched a then-season high with nine different pass catchers. At BYU, San Jose State had a season-high 11 players with a pass reception.
Of the 11 San Jose State pass receivers in the BYU game, wide receivers Tre Walker, Austin Liles and JaQuan Blackwell, tight end Billy Humphreys and running back Tyler Nevens are freshmen.
The last time a San Jose State team had at least 10 players with a pass reception in a game was last year's San Diego State contest when 10 players combined to catch 28 passes in a 42-3 loss.
Two more TDs through the air: In the 41-20 loss at BYU, San Jose State's two touchdowns came via the pass. The Spartans have only one rushing touchdown this season on a 17-yard run by Zamore Zigler in the September 2 win over Cal Poly.
Second 100-yard rusher in 2017: For the second time this season, a San Jose State player rushed for 100-plus yards in a game when freshman Tyler Nevens gained 112 yards on 26 carries at BYU on October 28. It was the first time as a Spartan Nevens rushed for 100 or more yards in a contest. Zamore Zigler gained 121 yards on 12 carries in the Cal Poly win on September 2.
Season-low two penalties: The two San Jose State penalties in the BYU game marked the fewest number of penalties in a Spartan game this season and is a reversal of the season-high 11 penalties in the loss at Hawai'i two weeks earlier.
Spartans in top-20 for fumble recoveries: Heading into the San Diego State game, San José State is tied for 17st nationally with eight fumble recoveries.
Safety Chandler Hawkins added to the Spartans' total in the BYU game with a fumble recovery in the end zone.
Bowling Green and Memphis share the national lead with 12 fumble recoveries.
Spartans in top-25 for defensive touchdowns: Heading into the San Diego State game, San José State is tied for 24st nationally with two touchdowns scored by its defense. In the Cal Poly win, linebacker Jamal Scott picked up a fumble and ran 22 yards for a touchdown. More recently against Utah State, cornerback Jermaine Kelly scored a touchdown on a 68-yard interception return.
Texas is the national leader with five defensive touchdowns.
