Gauvain Defeats Nationally-Ranked Opponent At ITA All-American Championships

Oct. 3, 2017

Pacific Palisades, Calif.----- Sybille Gauvain, San Jose State University's number-one singles player on the women's tennis team, won one of two matches against top-100 opponents on her first day at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships.

Ranked #50 nationally in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) preseason rankings, Gauvain roared back from an early first-set deficit to defeat North Carolina State's Anna Rogers, ranked #79 in the ITA rankings, 6-3, 6-0.

"Every player here is tough and you need to stay focused and play aggressive to be successful here. It was a great effort by Sybille winning her second match of the day," said San Jose State head coach Chad Skorupka about Gauvain's first win of the season against a nationally-ranked opponent.

"After being down 3-2 in the first set, Sybille won 10 straight games to close out the match."

Earlier in the day, the senior from Frejus, France lost to #27-ranked Felicity Maltby of Texas Tech, 6-0, 6-2.

Now in the consolation side of the bracket, Gauvain will play her third Riviera/ITA All-American Championships singles match on October 4.
