Moraga, Calif.----- Freshmen Julie Vereecke and Savannah Sendar each won a singles match and teamed up for a pair of doubles victories on the first day of the three-day Saint Mary's Invitational women's tennis tournament.
Sendar topped Santa Clara's Delaney Nothraft, 6-0, 6-0 while Vereecke also was as good on the scoreboard with her 6-2, 6-0 win over Santa Clara's Nadine DelCarmen.
The Spartan pair went on to Nothraft and Santa Clara teammate Elvina Gevargiz, 8-2, in a first-round doubles match. Sendar and Vereecke finished up a busy day with an 8-5 win over Sonoma State's Hannah Highsmith and Katherine Long in a quarterfinal round doubles contest.
Laura Malsert and Jacqueline Wagner were two more first-round straight-set singles winners for San Jose State.
Second-day action starts at 8:30 a.m. with doubles matches. Singles begins at 10:00 a.m.
