San Jose, Calif.-The San José State volleyball team had to come back in sets four and five Saturday afternoon for a 3-2 win over New Mexico (25-18, 16-25, 21-25, 25-18, 15-13) in a Mountain West match inside Spartan Gym.
Trailing 2-1 after the third set, the Spartans found themselves down 15-12 to New Mexico in set four. The team slowly chipped away at the lead and eventually took the lead for good at 18-17. In all, San José State outscored the Lobos 13-3 to win the set 25-18 on a New Mexico attack error.
Tied at 2-2, New Mexico trailed 10-7 in the fifth set but used a 6-1 run to take a 13-11 lead. After a San José State timeout, the Spartans came out and scored four consecutive points to win the set 15-13 and the match 3-2.
Spartan Nandyala Gama led all hitters with a career-best 22 kills, her third consecutive match with 20+ kills. She hit .333 with 48 attempts and six errors. She also had a team-best seven blocks in the win.
The Spartans had two other hitters with double-digit kills - Giulia Gávio with 18 and Thaliana Grajeda at 12. Gávio was one dig short of a double-double, and Grajeda had four block assists and a career-best four digs.
Setter Breann Robinson had her second double-double of the week and fourth of the season with 50 assists and 10 digs. She also had five blocks, one solo and four assists.
Jamie Hirai led the Spartan defense with 14 digs and added five kills for the team. Luiza Andrade added 10 digs, six assists and two service aces.
San José State goes on the road next week with matches at #23 Colorado on Thursday at 7 p.m. MT/6 p.m. PT, and at Wyoming next Saturday at 1 p.m. MT/12 p.m. PT.
