San Jose, Calif. --- Ryan Welage scored a career-high 30 points to lead the San José State men's basketball team to a 97-45 win over Antelope Valley in the regular season opener.
Welage was one of four Spartans in double-figure scoring and he had 20 points at halftime.
SJSU took a 48-33 lead into the halftime locker room, and then blasted the Pioneers with a 25-2 run over the first 9:46 of the second period.
Almost everyone played a part in the big run which started with Jaycee Hillsman's and-1. Welage hit a jumper followed by a pair of free throws, and then a layup by Ryan Singer put the Spartans ahead 57-33.
But that was only the beginning as Keith Fisher III got in the mix with a couple of baskets, Noah Baumann connected from deep and scored five straight points. Baumann's fellow freshman guard Caleb Simmons also made a couple of layups as part of the run.
By the 9:39 mark in the second period the Spartans had grown the lead to 40.
SJSU finished the game shooting 52.3 percent (34-65) and hit 9-of-18 from downtown. Jalen James connected on all three of his attempts from beyond the arc, while Welage and Baumann each hit three of their own from deep.
James finished with 15 points and Fisher and Baumann each put in 12 to round out the double-figure scorers for the Spartans. Isaiah Nichols finished with a career-high 10 rebounds to help SJSU win the battle of the boards, 53-31.
Antelope Valley (2-1) shot just 24.6 percent (16-65) for the game and was held to only three field goals in the second period.
The result goes down as the first head coaching win for San José State's Jean Prioleau. He and his Spartans have a quick turnaround to face San Diego on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. (PT) in The Event Center.
