San Jose, Calif. --- The Spartans put together a 25-5 run during the second half, but it wasn't enough to overcome the early deficit and the San José State men's basketball team lost to San Diego, 81-64, in The Event Center on Sunday.
Trailing by 30 points, 64-34, with 14:00 left in the second period, Jaycee Hillsman put a charge into the Spartans with a drive down the right baseline and a thunderous one-handed slam dunk. It was the beginning of a 9-0 run which made it 64-43 with 10:32 to go.
A few minutes later three consecutive layups by Oumar Barry, Hillsman and Isaiah Nichols were part of an 11-0 SJSU run, which the lead to 69-56 with 5:42 left. On the next Spartans possession Hillsman split a double-team at the top of the arc on the left wing, and went to the rim trying to make it an 11-point game. After a collision in the paint it was Hillsman who got whistled for the offensive foul.
A free throw by Keith Fisher with 3:45 left made it a 12-point game, but that would be all for the Spartans.
The Toreros got back-to-back layups from Yauhen Massalski and Olin Carter, III, which pushed the lead back to 17 points and put SJSU away for good.
It was all Toreros in the first half thanks in part to 10 SJSU turnovers leading to 16 points on the other end. San Diego took a 51-29 lead into the halftime locker room, and then went on a 10-0 run in just over two minutes before the first media timeout in the second period.
Isiah Wright scored a game-high 22 points and was one of four Toreros in double-figure scoring. USD shot 57.4 percent (31-54) from the field and hit 9-of-17 from downtown.
Ryan Welage led San José State with 17 points on 4-of-13 shooting. Hillsman finished with 13 points. SJSU shot 38.2 percent (21-55) from the field and hit 3-of-13 shots from deep.
San José State hits the road next week for a game at Southern Utah University on Thursday, Nov. 16. Tipoff is set for 6:30 p.m. (MT).
