Indianapolis, Ind.----- For the first time in nine years, the San Jose State University men's soccer team will have a Ratings Percentage Index (RPI) in the top-100 at the end of the season.
Following their appearance in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Tournament championship game against #23-ranked Seattle University, the Spartans (9-11-1) have a RPI of 70. The 2008 San Jose State team finished with a RPI rating of 97. The RPI measures a team's winning percentage and strength of schedule.
"I'm very proud of this young team. We had 15 newcomers on this squad. Six of the starters in the WAC championship game were first-year players at the four-year collegiate level," said San Jose State men's soccer head coach Simon Tobin, whose team won seven of their last nine matches -- five by shutouts.
"There should be a bright future for San Jose State University men's soccer."
San Jose State finished above .500 in regular-season league play and reached the WAC Tournament final by defeating #12-Air Force, 1-0, in a conference tournament semifinal contest. Overall, the Spartans played matches against top-20 ranked teams four times.
